Protect Long Island Sound – Stop Broadwater

Overview | Fact Sheet |

Untitled Document

What’s New
Broadwater Energy, backed by Shell Oil and TransCanada, wants to build a massive, dangerous Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) processing facility in the middle of Long Island Sound. This 10 story tall, 1,200-foot long facility threatens to further pollute the waters of Long Island Sound, setting back years of efforts to clean up and protect the Sound.

Local citizens and officials in communities across the state have spoken out opposing Broadwater. Last year, Governor Rell created a task force led by State Senators Len Fasano (R-North Haven) and Andrea Stillman (D-Waterford) to study the impact of the proposal on Long Island Sound. The task force has heard from local citizens, businesses, environmental and energy advocates all opposing Broadwater and supporting smarter, cheaper solutions to Connecticut’s energy needs that don’t threaten the Sound.

ConnPIRG is working with other advocates to urge Governor Rell to take the next step and lead the opposition to Broadwater. Her leadership is vital if we are going to be successful our efforts to protect Long Island Sound and stop Broadwater.

How You Can Help
Urge the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to Reject Broadwater.

Background
Long Island Sound is an important resource that enhances the quality of life in Connecticut’s communities. For generations, our families have enjoyed the Sound’s beaches, fished and boated on its waters. However, coastal development and decades of inappropriate uses polluted the Sound and threatened the health of its waters.

In recent years, we have made progress in efforts to reverse the damage and clean up the Sound. The quality of its waters has begun to improve, helping ensure its health for the future. Now, Shell Oil and TransCanada are threatening that progress by proposing to build a massive, dangerous Liquefied Natural Gas processing facility called “Broadwater” in the middle of the Sound.

On January 30, 2006, the formal application to build Broadwater was filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. We can stop Broadwater, but we need Governor Rell and other officials in Connecticut and Washington D.C. to lead the fight to Protect Long Island Sound and stop Broadwater. More.
