Over 200 diseases and disorders are now linked to toxic chemicals in our products, homes, workplaces, and communities. Some chemicals of concern are used to make children's products ranging from baby bottles to tea sets and jewelry. The federal system to regulate these chemicals is broken, and currently allows hazardous chemicals to remain in commerce and even in products designed for our youngest and most vulnerable.

In the absence of federal action to protect children from hidden toxic dangers, Connecticut should lead the way. Safer alternatives exist for many chemicals of concern, and should be used whenever feasible.

The Connecticut State Legislature has the opportunity to safeguard our economy and our health by taking action on this issue.

Please take a minute to personalize a message and to urge your state legislator to support HB 5601, which would phase out the chemicals of highest concern in children's products, and prepare our state to assist companies in transitioning to safer alternatives.

I am very concerned about the health effects of toxic chemicals in everyday products including children's toys, and urge you to make Connecticut a leader in finding and using safer alternatives by supporting HB 5601. Federal regulations are not working to protect our most vulnerable population, children, and the state needs to act to protect them now. Cost-effective safer alternatives exist for many of the toxic chemicals in use today. Please let me know if you will work to pass HB 5601, to phase out lead, phthalates, and Bisphenol-A from children's products, and if you will support funding for testing products and shifting to safer alternatives. I look forward to your reply regarding whether or not you will support this important legislation.
