| PROTECT LONG ISLAND SOUND—One of Connecticut’s most iconic and
best-loved places, the sound is in danger of becoming the new home to a
10-story high, 1,200-foot long liquefied natural gas facility. ConnPIRG
is working to stop the proposal. |
This winter, ConnPIRG continued
our advocacy opposing Broadwater
Energy’s proposal to anchor a
floating 10-story high, 1,200-foot
long facility for processing liquefied
natural gas (LNG) in the middle of
Long Island Sound, jeopardizing
the Sound’s safety, wildlife and
recreational opportunities.
These efforts received a welcome
boost on Feb. 20 when we joined
Sen. Joseph Lieberman at a Hartford
press conference. Before an
audience, the senator announced
his opposition to the Broadwater
project and called on federal officials
reviewing Broadwater’s
application to reject it.
In addition to threatening the
health of Long Island Sound with
a large industrial facility in its
waters, the Broadwater proposal
is the wrong way to meet the energy
needs of Connecticut and the
region. Investing in clean energy
and energy efficiency are smarter,
cheaper options for securing our
energy future.
This spring and summer, ConnPIRG and our allies are continuing
to work with state officials to
protect the sound by urging federal
officials to reject the proposal.
